Medina Hamedu (mother) with 2yo Hadi Mohammed with severe acute malnutrition, Dubti Hospital
There is only one referral hospital in the Afar region. With many health centres destroyed during the conflict, this is the only hospital in the Afar region, overcrowded and overwhelmed.
Malnutrition pre conflict 5 per week; post conflict approx. 45 per week.
MSF has been working in this hospital day and night for the past 4 months. They are also building a temporary tented site comprising 60 beds (TBC) with air conditioning on top of the existing 14 bed (TBC). The expected completion is estimated for August. A permanent structure is also being erected. These beds are expected to fill extremely quickly as the number of malnutrition cases is sitting at 48 at present. “This is only the beginning”, said Jon Irwin Emergency Coordinator, Médecins Sans Frontières.
