Sanitation remains a challenge throughout many of these IDP sites. This one in particular is experiencing a situation where existing latrines are full and decommissioned, resulting in residents having to practise open toiletry.
The latrines are filled and will need to be recommissioned and reconstructed. At the time of this interview, each of five latrines were filled to the brim and covered, forcing the residents to practise open toiletry. The stench was impossible, let alone the hygiene. Most of the residents of these IDP sites do not have shoes. 3 new trenches were being dug to create new latrines, which I only imagine would last a short time considering the number of people within the site.
This lack of sanitation and hygiene is causing the majority of health challenges, on top of the likes of malaria which is also rampant throughout the site.
