Mass graves took over parts of the landscape, jutting out of the earth, a reminder of the barbaric atrocities that have occurred here in Afar
Not far from the horror we have just attended, was a single site of about ten or so mounts of rock formations. These were mass graves, rocks stacked up high and protruding off the ground so they can be seen from the road - both to remember those who have lost their lives to the conflict as well as their need to be revenged. There were a couple of large plots of about 12-20 men, a few smaller plots of about 12 women in each, and another where the bodies of 7 children laid, quickly buried before family members fled for their lives. I’m unsure how many other of these sites there may be across the woreda of Abala.
