Families destroyed and homes turned to rubble in Baalbek, Lebano

Families destroyed and homes turned to rubble in Baalbek, Lebano

As I trudged through the rubble that was once a home, there were traces of what was once families living here. Children's blankets, toys, and belongings were scattered around.

Two women, four man and 3 children were marytred on 6 November 2024 when their home was targeted. Two of whom were still under the rubble at the time and civil defense personnel had been working hard to find and retrieve their bodies. The bomb blast was so powerful that the two family members, a father and his one month old son, had been propelled across from their apartment block into the one opposite theirs, a few hundred metres in front.

It wasn't possible to enter the residential block that was targeted as most of it had been turned to rubble. However I did visit the residential block on the opposite side where civil defense was working. The front of that block was heavily damaged. There was a huge hole on the second storey of the building. The windows and doors either blown out of place or shattered, leaving glass shards everywhere in my path.

In here, civil defense worked with their bare hands, shovels and basic tools in their desperate attempt to find the two missing bodies trapped under the rubble. They had been working for hours, from the day the airstrike occurred. Eventually, unidentifiable pieces of their bodies were retrieved from the rubble and were placed into a bag, then into a shroud. Those body parts belonged to a one month old baby and his father, who were ordinary, innocent civilians.
