Context:

Most of the community here worked for CDC banana plantations. Most of the community has not been paid properly for 6 years. They worked for 12 months last year but was only paid for 2. CDC employees were also being attacked by NSAGs as CDC is partly owned by the government. NSAGs purport that employees were supporting government initiatives by working for CDC and were attacking wrokers in plantations. Some wrokers were kidnapped, some had their limbs amputated. This resulted in the abandonment of plantations as workers were too frightened to go back to work. The Covid-19 crisis has also exacerbated the slow-down in production and sales, resulting in reduced demand and hence CDC's inability to pay salaries.

It was 24 August 2018. Lawrence was working in the packing house at CDC on that day, showing other workers what to do. Then at 1120am, he recalled distinctly, the commotion begun. There were people running and shouting. "Those boys (NSAG) have come! There were plenty of them! They've surrounded the whole place!" Lawrence relived the ordeal explaining how they were put in groups. "There were many groups. We were all made to lie down flat! Tap! Tap! Tap! They would beat the back of our legs with machetes". They took his phone, kicked the table next to him, kicked him and slapped his legs and his back with a large machete. They kept beating him! He was conscious to stay still and flat as if he moved, the armed group would turn the machete over to the sharp side, cutting them instead of just beating them. Some people had their fingers chopped off, some had their arms amputated. "One man, his intestines almost came out", he described. As we were on the ground, the armed groups set the packing house on fire, all 8000 cartons! The NSAG then told them to run as when the army (government) comes, they will start shooting and everyone will die! Everyone escaped o
