SW Crisis - Buea
Name: Ewe Camella 28yo
Single mother with 3 children (11, 4 and nearly 2yo plus late sister's child who is living with her)
The crisis started in 2017. There was rampant shooting from which they were running from. As they did so, the military caught them and asked interrogated her about whether she knew any of the Non State Armed Groups (NSAGs). When they were escaping gunshots, a stray bullet hit her sister, mother of the child she is now caring for, killing her. They continued on to the bush for cover. When they were hiding in the bush, Ewe's brother was tailed by the military as he had bought a sack of rice. They followed him with suspicion of supplying rice to NSAGs. Even after he had explained that it was for his family, they shot him twice, presumably killing him.
She proceeded to Buea as her husband was already in Buea at the time. She first arrived in Bamenda, already pregnant with her youngest child. With the goodwill of a bus driver, he took her to Buea where she met her husband. Things were already for him, and assumably, their children and her added to that stress. He would at times head out and not return. One day he left and never came back.
When her husband left and she was left stranded and homeless. One night, she was met by a man in town who offered her a house that would however leak during the rainy season. She accepted it regardless as she needed a place simply to put her head down.
They had nothing in the house. They had no light so they used candles. It was ok. She had no mattress either. IRC assisted with all of that. One of her children currently attends school and takes about one and a half hours travel time.
Before the crisis they used to survive ok from the farming of corn, beans, sweat potatoes. They didn't need to pay rent. LIfe was fine until now.
