SW Crisis - Buea - CDC Community Aid

SW Crisis - Buea - CDC Community Aid

Context:

Most of the community here worked for CDC banana plantations. Most of the community has not been paid properly for 6 years. They worked for 12 months last year but was only paid for 2. CDC employees were also being attacked by NSAGs as CDC is partly owned by the government. NSAGs purport that employees were supporting government initiatives by working for CDC and were attacking wrokers in plantations. Some wrokers were kidnapped, some had their limbs amputated. This resulted in the abandonment of plantations as workers were too frightened to go back to work. The Covid-19 crisis has also exacerbated the slow-down in production and sales, resulting in reduced demand and hence CDC's inability to pay salaries.

FAO assists these communities with hens (layers).

Name: Pas Mangomba 59yo
Widowed. Husband passed since 1990
9 Children plus sister's children.

Due to the crisis in Muea where separatist groups were murdering people in the communities, all her sister's children have moved to Buea to live with her. There are 15 of them living in this two bedroom house, sleeping sofas, mats on the ground, and wherever else they would fit. This has been the case now for the past 4 years.

Currently, Magonmba is doing some farming, a plot provided by FAO, which provides food for the family, however not an income. The likes of cassava, plantains are available. She also has received the hens from FAO 10 months ago which is providing them with some eggs. She used to work for the CDC but hasn't been paid since 2018. FAO initiatives have provided a means for survival. However outside of this, the family does not have any income to purchase anything else.
