SW Crisis - LImbe
We interviewed two teachers who were at the school on 4 November 2020, around 730am-8am. Children were still arriving at school. Masked armed men jumped over the fences. Children and teachers were screaming, running. It was chaotic. These armed men cornered teachers and students into a classroom and made them take their clothes off. "We knew they were coming to kill us as they already attacked schools in Kumba one week ago". "They asked us to choose long sleeve or short sleeve" before pouring petrol all over them. They had axes with them. NSAGs wanted them to choose: Long sleeve was to have their arms cut off and short sleeve was to have their fingers chopped off. NSAGs threatened to burn them all. By that stage, the Principle's office was already in flames.
The new school is currently being built as most of school was burnt. Some of the classrooms still remain, science laboratory apparatus still sitting the way they were when the school was abandaoned. A date "2020" was still visible on one of the blackboards. As the teachers walked through the school grounds, one of them relived moments where a gun was pointed at her as she faced the classroom door. They also recalled teachers and studnets hiding in the toilet. block. Both teachers stood at the back of the classroom, remembering those very moments when they were made to strip naked and had petrol poured all over them.
The teachers are still very much traumatised by the incidence now. They are not really able to talk about it and do not like thinking about what they'd gone through.
They would like to go back to teaching one day when the crisis stops.
