At the port in Renk where returnees from Sudan will board a boat that will take about 600 passengers to Malakal in 2.5 days before they continue their journey to other parts of the country. The onboarding process from the transit centre to the boat takes around 4 hours, under strenuous conditions in the hot Sudanese sun (45 deg cel), esepcially for the elderly, women and children. Soft luggages are placed at the base of the boats, acting as seats for the passensgers who were all cramped together with hardly any space between them. Limited furniture and hard luggages are placed at the tail of the boat, bound. The thing to note is even though many of these returnees' place of origin is South Sudan, many were either born in Sudan or were taken to Sudan when they were children and hardly identifies with South Sudan as their home. For them even though this is their ancestral land, they are having to start from scratch. Many returnees also harbour hopes of the war in Sudan easing so they can return. The ones who decide to stay will be reestablishing themselves and their livelihoods in a completely new town.
