FAO-Elyaskhail

Elyaskhail - Climate change impacts over the past 30 years. Previously cultivated and fertile land. There were wildlife such as deers and wolves in the past but they've since migrated. There used to be trees on these lands which have unfortunately been cut down for firewood, either for sale to sustain their families or to keep themselves warm through the winter months.

During the rainy seasons, rain would help propagate enough vegetation for livestock. At times it would even flood the area should rainfall be too persistent. However rain has been scarce over the past 10 years.

This entire area used to be green but no longer.

Beyond the highlands was a river. Water used to fill that river, which now merges into the land, dry and arid.

FAO is looking to revegetate the area with drought resistent plants such as an adpated species of walnuts and almonds, irrigation for livestock and flood resistent strategies. They are also looking to build dams to capture water should rain come.
