Family Interview
For the purpose of this story and to protect the identities of the people, I will name them as follows:
Father: Mahmoud
Mother: Miriam
Daughter: Raya
Middle son: Ali
Youngest son: Hassan

The family of five remains in Tyre.
Miriam and Mahmoud has three children - Raya 13yo, Ali 10yo and Hassan 8yo. Mahmoud was an electrician before the war begun. With most of Tyre now empty, Mahmoud no longer has a job. Miriam continues to care for the home and their children.

The children are currently doing online studies. Raya was in grade 7 and misses school immensely, especially physics. It is especially difficult for her because this should have been her first year of senior school, a significant transition, “very different to being in primary school”, Miriam their mother said. Ali was in grade 4. He seemed nonchalant and was happy playing computer games. Hassan was in grade 2, all his bounds of energy trapped in his eyes and very being. He misses his friends a lot and wishes he could play with them at school. Schools in Tyre have basically stopped functioning. Whilst some schools are offering online studies which “is so difficult to implement” said Miriam, other schools are not.

A house literally a few steps from their home, just around the corner, was reduced to a rubble in an Israeli airstrike. When the strike happened, Miriam and Hassan were sitting outside of their front door, enjoying some fresh air. Before the strike around the corner from them, the children used to play with the other kids in the houses on a daily basis. Those houses have now been reduced to rubble. Some of the children in those houses are no longer with us. When I asked why they’ve chosen to stay, Miriam answered, “where should we go? On the street?” Nowadays, the family would spend most of their days indoors.
