Gumuz Returnee Village, Gilgel Beles, Benishangul-Gumuz
We were at a returnee village not far from Gilgelbeles zone, a village that houses around 1200 people of the Gumuz ethnic group, displaced into surrounding forest areas about 4 months ago due to persecution from other ethnic groups, mainly the Amharic ethnic group who were the majority impacted by the rebellion. As they say, in a war, nothing makes logical sense. It is no different in this case where the Gumuz people were attacked because of their associated ethnicity to the militia group. However due to successful reconciliation efforts by the government, these people have actually returned to their cultural lands of origin, though not without a mount of challenges.
