There are several villages that are situated very close to this part of the Awash river. When the dams are open to release excess water from the highlands, flood water including debris washes through this area, breaking river banks, destroying homes and displacing villagers and livestock. It seemed when this occurred previously, the various administrations in charge failed to notify local communities in time for evacuation.
